I’ve never fallen for a city as quickly as I did with Taipei. The love was instant. The moment the plane touched down, I felt it. Despite having five days in Taiwan during my Asia journey in 2016, and a plan to explore its mountainous landscapes, I ended up spending most of my days in Taipei. Only once did I venture outside the city, to climb a mountain in Yangmingshan National Park. And I don’t regret it for a second. Taipei is one of the very few cities in the world where I’ve felt completely content to stay put. Usually, I’m itching to get out and explore the surrounding nature, but Taipei had an energy, a warmth and an atmosphere that completely captivated me. I didn’t want to leave.
Of course, I still dream of seeing more of Taiwan – its national parks, its coastlines, its intriguing culture – but more than anything, I’m desperate to return to Taipei. I can’t wait for the day I step off a plane and feel that spark all over again!
