Ever since I first set foot on the Faroe Islands back in October 2013, I’ve known that I need to move there someday. And so the search for the perfect place to move to began. I’ve since been to the islands nine times, and thus seen much of the beautiful country. The only requirement is that I want it to be conveniently close to Tórshavn, the nation’s capital, but not in the actual city. I’d considered the village of Velbastaður with the incredible views of Koltur, Hestur and Sandoy and only a 10-minute drive from the center of Tórshavn. I’d considered Norðradalur, a charming village on the west coast of Streymoy and just 15 minutes from Tórshavn. And I’d considered Kalbak, a cute village located within the area of the free city busses in the capital but surrounded by mountains and fjords. And then there is Nólsoy, a small island located 20 minutes by ferry from Tórshavn, with a colourful village inhabited by friendly and welcoming people and incredible nature with countless hiking opportunities – and even puffins, which I discovered this summer when i visited the island with my friend Laura. Nólsoy also has a supermarket and two cozy cafés with live music and great food. It has everything I need and despite being an island it’s still only 20 minutes from the capital and the ferry departs quite often. To me, the best part about Nólsoy is the fact that it’s an island. I love the tranquility. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been intrigued by island life. I love visiting islands around Denmark and as a child always thought I’d eventually settle down on the tiny island of Tunø with just 118 inhabitans. But that was before I discovered the Faroe Islands and fell in love. Now I’m even more in love, in love with Nólsoy. At the moment, I’m living on Greenland, but I will leave in February next year. Then I’ll go back to Denmark for a few weeks before moving again. And you’ve probably guessed where – I’m moving to Nólsoy! I’m so excited. I posted a request for accommodation in the Faroe Islands for April and May 2019, and a lovely woman commented and offered me a room in their summer house on Nólsoy, which is within my budget. I couldn’t believe my luck! So, on April 1st, I will move to my favourite country, at first for two months, and then I’ll see where life brings me. I’m going to spend my time there finishing my bachelor’s thesis, spending time with friends, hiking, practicing my Faroese and just enjoying life.
