I first travelled to Serbia in October 2021 for a two-week archaeological prospection in the north of the country. Based in the small town of Novi Bečej, I spent my days crisscrossing the region with a team of local archaeologists and colleagues from Kiel, conducting geophysical analyses and surface collections at various Neolithic sites. On the weekends, we took time to see the area, exploring the town itself, the atmospheric church ruins of Arača, and the dried salt lake of Slano Kopovo.
After the project wrapped up, I joined a colleague for a visit to the city of Kikinda, before continuing on my own to Novi Sad for three days. Serbia’s second-largest city didn’t disappoint. One of my highlights was hiking in the nearby Fruška Gora National Park, where I unexpectedly came across an abandoned castle – a magical and mysterious surprise!
Five months later, in March 2022, I returned to Serbia for another round of archaeological prospections with the same team. This time, a friend joined me at the start of the trip, and we spent a few days exploring Belgrade, including the historic neighborhood of Zemun. During the two weeks of fieldwork, we revisited some of the same sites as the previous autumn, but most were new. We also got the chance to explore the small city of Zrenjanin, and on the weekend, I took a solo trip up north to Subotica – one of the most beautiful cities in Serbia, famous for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture.
