I had travelled to Ireland to ring in New Year’s 2015/16 in Dublin with a friend, when we spontaneously decided to venture north – to Northern Ireland, a place neither of us had been before. On the very first day of the new year, still exhausted from the night before, we boarded a bus to Belfast for a quick day trip to the capital.
I honestly can’t remember if we did any planning beforehand, but with the rain pouring down, there wasn’t much sightseeing to be done anyway. We just wandered through the streets, taking in the lingering Christmas decorations and the atmosphere of a city still in holiday mode. Despite the grey skies and wet shoes, we both agreed on one thing: even in the rain, we liked Belfast better than Dublin.
