January was my last full month in Nuuk, and it was an eventful one! I had so much that I wanted to do and see before leaving the city, so I was on the go for most of the month!
Goodbye to my family
My family came to visit me over the Holidays, and their last two days were in January! After a great New Years Eve, we spent January 1st sleeping in and exploring a few viewpoints, and the next day, it was time to say goodbye as they headed back to Denmark.
I was really sad to see my family go, but happy that I still had Charlotte with me in the apartment for another eight days!
The last days with Charlotte
For the next week, Charlotte and I explored some more of Nuuk, went out to eat, attended Bahá’í devotionals, visited the cute animals at the animal shelter and Charlotte got a tattoo! We had some wonderful days together before she left Nuuk on the 10th.
Charlotte was the last of my roomies to leave, so from January 10th, I had the entire (enormous) apartment for myself! I was initially worried that I’d get lonely, but I actually thrive in my own company, so I didn’t have any problems.
A meteor lit up the entire sky
On January 3rd at 6.55 PM, a meteor flew over the city of Nuuk, lighting up the pitch-black sky in incredible blue colours.
I was studying with my friends Louis and Anders at the time, and we all stopped immediately and just stared at the weird phenomenon in complete awe and disbelief. 2,5 minutes after we saw the light flash, we heard the bang. Absolutely astonishing.
I’ve never seen anything like it, and I feel soooo lucky to have had such a unique experience!
The last two photos are taken by a surveillance camera before and during the meteor flash. That’s how big the change in light was! Source: videnskab.dk
Exams and work at the museum
The next week was spent finishing my written exam in Anthropological Methods, and doing my 48-hour exam in Greenlandic History. I was so happy when my teacher told me that I got an A for my presentation of the political administrative system from 1857 to 1911 in Greenland, as it was the only course with grades given this semester. It’s so nice to have a clean transcript!
When I had finished my exams, I finally found time to begin my bachelor’s thesis. I think it’s going to be great – but I’ll tell you more about it later!
Throughout January, I worked twice a week at the National Museum where I’d been volunteering since October. I loved working there, as my colleagues were great and I learned a lot everyday.
The return of Augusta
On January 17th, my friend Augusta finally came back to Nuuk after a five-week holiday in Denmark, USA and Chile. It was great to see her again, and we spent the rest of the month hanging out multiple times per week!
We had sleepovers, attended the Culture Night in Nuuk, got photographed to a university magazine, stayed up way too late to see a lunar eclipse (which was covered by thick clouds at totality….), went climbing, played billiard and hung out with our other friends.
Exploring the last parts of Nuuk
Throughout the month, I spent a lot of time exploring some new parts of Nuuk and revisiting some of my favourite areas. Augusta and I spent an afternoon walking to the end of the industrial island, and I discovered a few new viewpoints within the city limits, something I’ll be blogging about very soon!
Nuuk has so much to offer, it’s incredible. There are so many great views and hikes even within the city. I don’t think I’ll ever get enough!

Coming up in February 2019
I’m going home! On February 4th, I left Nuuk behind, which was incredibly tough. I flew to Reykjavík, where I’m currently sitting in my hostel and writing this. I’ll be here for the next few days, before I finally fly back to Denmark on the 8th. I’m so excited to finally see my family and friends again!
I will be in Denmark for only 10 days, five of them in Eastern Jutland with my family, and five of them in Copenhagen visiting friends, before I’m off again, this time to Scotland. My brother moved to Edinburgh on January 20th, so I’m very excited to visit him and have a personal tour guide!
I’ll arrive back home in Jutland on the 25th, and stay put for the last three days of the month. Throughout the month, I’ll be working on my bachelor’s thesis, so wish me luck!
