Denmark Greenland Iceland Monthly recaps Scotland

My February 2019: From Nuuk to Iceland, Denmark and Scotland

February was the month where I said goodbye to Greenland after five glorious months. After only seeing one city for several months, it was weird finding myself on the road again. February brought many travels with it, as I headed to Iceland, Copenhagen and Scotland and spent some time with my family in Eastern Jutland.

Leaving Nuuk York is never easy

The first four days of February were the four last days of my time in Greenland. I had my last day at work and my last climbing session. I then spent a day cleaning the entire apartment before moving out to Augusta in Qinngorput for my last few days. We had a blast together, watching the SuperBowl with a bunch of friends, going cross-country skiing with Torben, partying and playing pool and just relaxing and walking around Qinngorput.

I also said goodbye to my wonderful Bahá’í friends and the climbing club, two communities that I feel absolutely blessed to have become part of.

And then it was time to leave. Saying goodbye to Nuuk and my life and friends there was not easy, but it had to be done and thankfully I was (and still am) excited for the times to come.

Four days in Reykjavík

On my way back to Denmark, I decided to take a four-day stopover in Reykjavík, a city I visited back in 2015 and loved. It was almost the same price as if I’d just flown straight through to Denmark on a short stopover, so why not?

The days spent in Reykjavík were slow and relaxing. I walked for hours around the city and to the village of Seltjarnarnes to see the sunrise (I got up soooo early that day!). I visited the Bahá’í community and experienced the opening of the Winter Lights Festival.

It was a lovely few days, but by the end of it, I was more than ready to finally go home.

Back home with my family

On the evening of February 8th, I was finally back home in Hov with my family! The feeling of finally being home after almost 5,5 months was indescribable.

The first two days were spent clearing out my room and putting up my new Greenlandic sourvenirs, before digging into my bachelor’s project. I’m writing my project this semester (in fact, that’s the only thing I’m doing this semester). It’s a 30-page paper where I’m writing about the absence of burials from the Late Ertebølle period and the Earliest Neolithic period, during the transition to agriculture (ca. 4800-3800 BC). Such an exciting subject!

Copenhagen bound

Five days later, I was off again. This time to Copenhagen, where I lived for two years during my first four semesters as a bachelor’s student. I came back to Copenhagen to see my friends there and have a meeting with my BA supervisor.

I stayed with Solveig and Mikkel, two of my best friends in the city, and we had a blast. They had the cutest little dog, Trylle, visiting as well and I absolutely fell in love with her!

The days in Copenhagen were spent hanging out with friends at uni and at a birthday party, meeting with my supervisor and sorting some stuff out for my BA, spending an evening at my friend Lulas new place and hanging out with Solveig, Mikkel and Trylle. My stay there was too short as there were more friends that I wanted to see but didn’t get a chance to. Also, although I didn’t like living in Copenhagen, I actually really enjoyed spending time there this time around.

Scotland for a week

My younger brother Brandon moved to Edinburgh in January, so I really wanted to visit him and experience his beloved city. I spent an entire week with him, where we explored all of his favourite places including the famous Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Calton Hill with the incredible views of the city, the mountain Arthur’s Seat and the two quaint villages Duddingston Village and Dean Village. We also went on a free walking tour, a free ghost tour and spent an evening with the local Bahá’í community. And one day was spent on a tour of the highlands, which was also free – and incredible. We saw lochs, castles, mountains, a UNESCO bridge and many historic villages. AND HIGHLAND COOS!!

Scotland was a real treat, and it was wonderful to spend so much quality time with my brother in his favourite city.

A few days at home

I arrived home on the 25th, and stayed put in Eastern Jutland for the rest of the month (three days, hehe). My Mums birthday was the following day, so we celebrated her with presents and birthday cake! The rest of the days I spent studying for my BA and celebrating Ayyám-i-Há, the period of intercalary days in the Bahá’í calendar.

Coming up in March 2019

March is starting off with a bang, as I’m now in Ukraine with my mum! We’ll be exploring the capital city of Kiev, going on a haunting tour of Chernobyl and Pripyat and hopefully visiting a small village in the rural parts of the country.

The rest of March will be spent mostly on my computer, working on my BA. I’ll also see some of my friends and family and hopefully explore a bit of Denmark!
