Towns and villages visited: Novi Bečej, Beočin and Palić

I travelled to Serbia for the first time in October 2021, for a two-week archaeological prospection in the north. Based in the small town of Novi Bečej, I travelled around the region with a bunch of local archaeologists and archaeologists from Kiel, doing geophysical analysis and surface collections at various Neolithic sites. In the weekend, we explored Novi Bečej, the historic church ruin of Arača and the dried salt lake of Slano Kopovo.
After our project, I joined a colleague to the city of Kikinda, and then travelled by myself to Novi Sad for three days in Serbia’s second-largest city. I spent one of those days hiking in the beautiful nearby Fruška Gora National Park where I stumbled upon an abandoned castle!

Five months later, in March 2022, I returned for another two weeks of archaeological prospections with the team. My boyfriend joined me for the beginning of the trip, where we explored Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, and the historic neighbourhood of Zemun. During the two weeks of work, we travelled around to some of the same places as the year before but most of them were new! A few of us also got to explore the small city of Zrenjanin, and in the weekend, I went on a solo adventure to the Art Nouveau city of Subotica!
