Lithuania is probably the least known of the three Baltic countries, but it has so much to offer that it deserves to be at the top of any traveller’s wishlist. In my opinion, Lithuania is one of Europe’s best kept secrets.
I travelled to Lithuania as the last Baltic country in February 2016, alongside my mum on our annual mother/daughter trip. We based ourselves in Vilnius, the nation’s capital, for our weekend getaway.
Vilnius quickly became my favourite capital in the Baltics. I love how quirky the city is, and I especially enjoyed hiking to the Hill of Three Crosses and exploring the neighbourhood of Užupis, an artistic haven which actually declared itself an independent republic in 1998 (although Užupis Day falls on April 1st 🤔).
Besides exploring Vilnius and Užupis, we went on a day trip to the village of Trakai which is home to a gorgeous island castle in Lake Galvė. But Trakai is also home to the complete opposite of a fancy castle; a VERY haunted house. At least that’s what my mum and I believe after discovering the most spooky house on this planet!
