Liechtenstein is a tiny nation, nestled between Austria and Switzerland in the mighty Alps. Despite its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, it’s often overlooked – myself included, until 2021. That summer, while travelling through Austria with my family, I suggested we dedicate a day to roadtripping through Liechtenstein. The challenge? To see the entire country in just one day. And we did it. After all, Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world.
Starting in the south, we worked our way north. We visited the country’s only two intact medieval castles, wandered through the picturesque village of Triesenberg, got engulfed in thick fog atop a viewing tower, and explored the capital city of Vaduz. We crossed a historic footbridge into Switzerland, browsed a vintage store in Schaan, and ended the day at two atmospheric castle ruins in Schellenberg.
Of course, one day is only enough to skim the surface. It left me wanting more. I’m already dreaming of returning – next time with hiking boots and time to lose myself in those beautiful alpine trails.
