On a mild August afternoon, my brothers, dad and I headed out on a trip to a nearby nature pearl, Trustrup Høje. With my younger brother living in Scotland, me flying all over the world and my older brother taking care of his young family, it’s very rare that all three of us are in East Jutland at the same time. We had to celebrate that we were finally together again, so Brandon suggested we go to this beautiful area for a walk.
Trustrup Høje is a beautiful hilly landscape with magical views over Horsens Fjord to the islands Alrø, Hjarnø and Vorsø. Just south of the village Trustrup lies Udsigtshøjene (‘The Viewing Hills’), the perfect place to begin a hike through the area. The highest point is 70 meters above sea level, offering undisturbed views of the fjord and islands. From the hills, a network of small paths start and wind their way through the hilly landscape.
We followed a one kilometer marked trail which took us on a round-trip from the small parking lot, up Udsigtshøjene, through a small forest with blackberry bushes and along a field back to the car. We took our time to enjoy this short walk and the beautiful sun shining on us.
Afterwards, we drove a few kilometers down the road to Sondrup Strand, a quaint fishing village by the shore of Horsens Fjord. My older brother’s dog Maluh really enjoyed spending time in the water, and it was a perfect way to end the wonderful afternoon trip.
Trustrup Høje is only a short drive away from my hometown of Hov, but despite spending my first 21 years there, this was the first time I’d been to Trustrup. It just goes to show that even your own local area can surprise you with beautiful undiscovered places!
