On the southernmost island in the Faroe Islands, you’ll find the cozy and charming Café Mormor (‘Café Grandmother’). Located in the village of Tvøroyri where the ferry departs to Tórshavn, the café was our last stop on our four-hour roadtrip of Suðuroy. We had picked up a local hitchhiker from Vágur, 17-year-old Niels Áki who decided to join us at the café!
I had read really good reviews of the café beforehand and had actually discovered it on Instagram a few years earlier, so I’d been wanting to go there for a while. Luckily, the café was open despite it being Easter Day, and we were not disappointed!
The café is incredibly cozy with a very well thought out decor and an incredible view over the fjord. It lives up to its name as it’s full of vintage furniture and old books, magazines and newspapers. One newspaper that we found brought the news that Hitler was dead. It felt surreal to read such a historically important newspaper in a small café on Suðuroy.
The others ordered coffee, milkshake and cakes, and I decided to try out their vegan dish, a delicious lentil soup. Unfortunately, we had to rush to eat the food to catch our ferry, but we very much enjoyed spending a bit of time in the atmospheric café, although we could’ve easily spent a few hours more reading all the old newspapers and enjoy the view.
When I visit Suðuroy again, I will be sure to swing by Café Mormor. It’s the epitome of the relaxed atmosphere on the island.
How to find Café Mormor
Take the ferry from Tórshavn to Suðuroy. The price is 80 DKK for a passenger and 225 DKK for a car (incl. the driver). See the timetable here.
When you get off the ferry in Tvøroyri, drive, hitchhike or walk to Trongisvágur and then turn right onto Ósavegur and right again onto Á Brekkunum. Continue along the road until you get to Undir Heygnum and then drive down that. The café is no. 38 on that street.
The café serves coffee, tea, milkshake, juice, homemade bread, cakes and light dishes such as soup. There are a few vegan options there, such as the lentil soup, the juices and the milkshake (if you ask for it without milk).
