My August 2018: Moving away from Copenhagen

August was a busy month of fun with family and friends and preparing for my move to Greenland.

The last part of the Faroese adventure

The first part of the trip was at the end of July, which I wrote about in this post. The last part of the trip was spent mostly hanging out with my Faroese friends and families, hiking in Skopun and visiting an archaeological excavation in Sandur. I said goodbye to Amanda and hello to Laura, a friend from high school, who was visiting the Faroes with some friends from Denmark. We went to Nólsoy, my favourite island, for an afternoon of hiking and great food at Café Maggie’s. I spent the last evening with one of my Faroese families in Vestmanna, cutting the hair of their adorable dog Alex, hehe! This trip to the Faroe Islands was just as amazing as I had hoped!

Moving from Copenhagen

August was the month that I finally moved from Copenhagen! On the 5th, my parents, younger brother and friend Peter came over to help me move all of my stuff to my parents’ house in Jutland. I still had a few shifts left at work, so I stayed in Copenhagen for a few days more, sleeping on an air mattress in an empty room.

Teary-eyed, I said goodbye to my beloved workplace after having just two shifts the entire month. To be honest, it suited me quite well because of my busy schedule, but I was extremely sad to say goodbye to the place which I really love and enjoy spending time in. I’ve had a great summer there <3

The rest of my time in Copenhagen was spent saying goodbye my friends, which was also extremely sad. But I know that I’ll see them all again when I get back!

A day trip to Nekselø

On the second-last day in Copenhagen, I had a day off, so my friend Mads and I decided to go to Nekselø, a tiny island off the coast of Zealand, for a day of hiking! Nekselø really surprised me with its unique beauty, it’s cozy atmosphere and extremely friendly cats! It was also a lovely way to say goodbye to Mads, the only friend in Copenhagen who I knew before moving there!

Trips back home to Jutland

In between my time in Copenhagen in the beginning of the month, I spent some time in Eastern Jutland, where I got to spend time with my family and see some friends before the big move. I spent an evening playing fun games with Maria and Victoria and a day biking around the countryside with Maria (not the same Maria, hehe!). Those three girls represent my three longest friendships, so it was great to see them again and spend some time with them before moving abroad.

On the last day, I went to Moesgaard Museum to meet with an archaeologist, who showed me around the new exhibition on the Mongolian nomads and afterwards took me to a kitchen midden site in Norsminde, dated to the Ertebølle Culture (5500-4000 BC). It was nice to get back to archaeology for a while after such a long break from it!

A week with family in England

On August 17th, I flew to England with my grandmother and younger brother to visit the English side of my family in Thetford, and attend my mother’s cousin’s wedding. We spent a week there, where we had plenty of time to relax and walk around Thetford, but also spent a few days out and about, visiting new villages and churches in Norfolk, mountain biking in Thetford Forest and exploring Grime’s Graves, a Neolithic flint mining site! It was great to see my family there again; I hope to see them all soon again!

The most exciting archaeological excavation ever

The last week of August was spent in Jutland with my family, but I also found time for a few days of archaeological excavation in Hadsund. The archaeologist that I met with earlier in August had invited me to join the excavation of the biggest kitchen midden in Denmark! I spent two days there learning as much as I possibly could, digging through layers upon layers of shells, finding fish bones, bird bones and flint and getting to know a bunch of international archaeologists who were working on the site. Despite my short time there, it was the best excavation I’ve been on so far, and I hope to be able to work there again another year!

Family time in Jutland

The rest of my last week in Denmark was spent with my lovely family. We spent a day in Skals visiting my dad’s aunt Ninna, and my parents and I spent two days in Thy in Northwest Jutland, where we explored bunkers by the ocean, beautiful beach cliffs and some of the villages in the area. It was such a nice way to spend my last few days in Denmark before going to Greenland!

On August 31st, my aunt Inge picked me and all of my suitcases up and drove me to Aarhus, where we attended an interesting guided tour with a former homeless man, before I sat myself down on a train en route to Copenhagen. I gave my aunt that trip for Christmas last year, so I was happy that we managed to fit it in before I left!

I arrived in Copenhagen in the early hours of September 1st, the day that I moved to Greenland! You can read all about the move here.

Coming up in September 2018

I’m on Greenland! The move happened on September 1st, so the entire month will be spent getting used to life here, where I’ll stay until February next year. So far, I’m loving every minute of it!

I hope to explore quite a lot in September, as most things close down after this month because of the weather and limited daylight hours. I’m thinking boat trips and lots and lots of hiking!
