For as long as I remember, I’d dreamt about visiting Greenland. And when I finally did, I fell hard for the country. So hard that it’s now competing with the Faroes to be my favourite country.
Greenland was the first country I moved abroad to. For my 5th semester, I spent five months in Nuuk. Living in an apartment in central Nuuk with four other exchange students, life was pretty sweet. Nuuk felt like home to me.
Between exploring Nuuk, studying and working at the national museum, I found time for some travels. I went on tours into the Nuuk Fjord and spent most of October in North and South Greenland. I saw humpback whales, sailed amongst icebergs, witnessed northern lights, went crystal hunting, discovered Norse ruins, met an Arctic fox and hiked solo to the edge of the ice sheet. The South, in particular, blew me away!
I cried when I left Nuuk behind, but I had already started planning my return. For my 7th semester, I did an internship in Tasiilaq on the East coast, but first, I visited my friends in Nuuk and went on an epic four-day trek to the village of Kapisillit with two friends.
I spent 11 weeks in Tasiilaq, doing projects for the local museum, falling in love with a sled dog puppy and hiking everywhere possible. I also managed to visit Kulusuk twice and spent a day sailing through the Sermilik Icefjord to Tiniteqilaaq with two friends that came to visit me for a week. The East coast was all I’d hoped for and more.
