Åland – the forgotten nation of 6,700 islands. Tucked between Finland and Sweden, this autonomous region officially belongs to Finland, yet its culture and language are distinctly Swedish, making Åland a fascinating destination for curious travellers. But it’s not just the history that captivates – Åland also boasts breathtaking natural beauty and a serene island atmosphere.
In July 2016, I spent five unforgettable days biking and camping across nine of the islands with a friend, and I absolutely loved it. It was peaceful, picturesque, and felt so unmistakably Swedish. Ever since that trip, I’ve been dreaming of returning to explore more of the smaller, lesser-visited islands and venture further into the remote corners of this unique archipelago.
