My travel plans for the summer of 2019

The summer of 2019 is going to be an incredibly exciting one for me. I’m finally completely free to do whatever I please, and I’ve chosen to be on the road for most of the summer (no surprise there!). Over the next few months, I’ll be visiting 9 countries + 3 exclaves in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Excavation in Rural Russia

The first adventure of the summer is just around the corner! I’m heading to the tiny village of Stepnoye, located about three hour’s drive from the city of Chelyabinsk at the border between the Ural Mountains and Siberia in the Asian part of Russia.

I’ll be in this rural village for five weeks, excavating a Late Bronze Age settlement! It’s going to be very exciting, but also tough as our work days are 14-ish hours for six days per week. The Sundays will (hopefully) be spent exploring the area and getting some much needed rest!

We won’t have much internet, so I will be off the grid for the upcoming five weeks. It will be great to connect with the people I’m with, experience rural Russia and – hopefully – learn a bit of Russian while doing work that I adore!

Family Time in East Jutland

After Russia, I will head home to my family in East Jutland for five days. My mum and I have talked about visiting the island of Tunø, and we’ll also take a trip to Skals to visit my dad’s aunt, and otherwise I will just relax and prepare for the next adventure!

Stone Age Festival in Ertebølle

On July 8th, I will travel to the North of Jutland for a week-long Stone Age festival in the tiny village of Ertebølle! I’m looking forward to seven days of learning new crafts, connecting with nature, meeting like-minded people and sleeping under the stars.

Solo Travel through Southern Europe and Morocco

Just one day after the Stone Age festival, I’m off on a month-long solo trip through Southern Europe and Morocco! I’ll be flying into Milan, Italy, and out of Madrid, Spain, and going through 7 countries and 3 exclaves along the way. I originally wanted to do Interrail, but buying single tickets for busses and trains worked out cheaper, so that’s what I’m doing!

My route is as follows:

Milan, Italy (1 day) –> San Marino (2 days) –> Nice, France (1 day) –> Monaco (1 day) Barcelona, Spain (1 day) –> Málaga, Spain (1 day) –> Melilla, Spanish exclave (1 day) –> Fes, Morocco (2 days) –> Meknes, Moulay Idriss & Volubilis, Morocco (1 day) –> Rabat, Morocco (1 day) –> Tanger & Chefchaouen, Morocco (1½ days) –> Tetouan, Morocco (½ day) –> Ceuta, Spanish exclave (1 day) –> Gibraltar, British exclave (1 day) –> Huelva, Spain (1 day) –> Cross the border to Portugal by zipline (1 day) –> Évora, Portugal (1 day) –> Lisbon, Portugal (2 days) –> Madrid, Spain (1 day) –> Bilbao, Altamira & Monte Castillo, Spain (2 days) –> Madrid, Spain (2 days).

I can’t wait to experience more of Southern Europe and to visit San Marino, Monaco, Melilla & Ceuta, Morocco, Gibraltar, Portugal and the Basque Country for the first time!

Back in East Jutland

I’ll be back home on August 10th, just in time for my darling niece Ellie’s christening the next day. The following two weeks, I will spend mostly at home with my family in East Jutland, but I will also take a trip to Copenhagen to defend my BA thesis. If I get time, I would love to explore more of East Jutland during these two weeks, and maybe take some day trips to some small islands.

Back to Greenland

At the end of August, I’m FINALLY going back to my beloved Greenland! I’m doing a ten-week internship in Tasiilaq on the East coast in the autumn, but before that I will head to Nuuk for a few weeks to visit my friends and to go on an EPIC week-long hike from Nuuk to the village of Kapisillit near the ice sheet! I can’t wait to finally see my friends in Nuuk again and to experience a new part of Greenland afterwards!

Winter scenes in Nuuk. Soon I’ll be back for late summer!

I’m so ready to experience the best summer yet!

EXCUSE me, but “crossing the border to Portugal by zipline”?!?! Details, please!
Sounds like you will have the absolutely BEST summer, Melissa, and I’m so excited to follow your adventures. My summer plans so far consists of maybe a trip to Italy, a trip to Sweden, maybe Denmark and maybe Germany. So many maybes, and so little actual plans. Oh, and concerts with Sting, Bob Dylan and Rammstein (nice combo, lol). Also I’m hoping weather will be amazing so that I can hang a lot in my hammock, and go camping. 🙂
