Luxembourg is a beautiful, hidden gem nestled between Germany, Belgium and France at the heart of Europe. It’s often overlooked by tourists due to its tiny size, but Luxembourg had always appealed to me. So when I had a few days off from my summer job in 2017, I decided it was the perfect time to go.
I only spent two days in the country, but I managed to see a whole lot. I spent my first day exploring Luxembourg City, which quickly revealed itself as one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals.
On my second and unfortunately last day in Luxembourg, I wanted to get out of the city and explore some of the country’s smaller villages. I first headed to Vianden, a picturesque village located high up in the Ardennes. When the bus approached the tiny village, my jaw dropped. A medieval castle sits high in the hills, overlooking the quaint village, creating fairytale scenes. I hiked up to the castle and took the chairlift back to the village while taking in the breathtaking views.
In the afternoon, I visited Echternach, the oldest village in the country. Echternach is beautiful, full of colourful architecture and scenic views by the river Sauer, but my heart was back in Vianden.
In the evening, I headed to the airport where I had a rather interesting night… I had an early morning flight so I didn’t want to pay for a hostel, and since the airport closed between midnight and 4 AM, I snuck into a bathroom and slept on its floor (don’t worry, it was clean!) #budgettravelhack 😂
