Finland is a country that I’d always dreamt of visiting, mainly the north of the country. So for my journey through Northern Europe in the spring of 2015, I planned to go to northern Finland to hike and camp. Unfortunately, my tent was destroyed in a storm when I was on the Faroes, and with no cheap hostels to be found in the north, I decided to head to the south instead, more precisely to Helsinki, Finland’s capital.
I spent more time in Norway and Sweden than planned, leaving me with only three days to visit Helsinki – and one of them was spent on a day trip to Tallinn.
Unfortunately, I didn’t make the most out of my two days in the city. I was tired and worn out after spending two months on the road. Helsinki was my last destination before going home, and time just couldn’t go fast enough.
I felt so uninspired that I spent the entire first day shopping… The next morning, I pushed myself to explore some of Helsinki’s many gorgeous churches, but planned on spending the rest of the day doing nothing. But thankfully, I met some great people at my hostel who invited me along to Suomenlinna, a picturesque sea fortress built on eight islands. I really enjoyed my time there and I was glad to see something else than just the city, and to feel just a little bit inspired again.
