As I was nearing the end of my two-month journey through Northern Europe, I made a spontaneous decision to add Estonia to my itinerary. Most may not consider Estonia as part of Northern Europe, but the country shares a lot of history with the Nordic countries. In fact, the country has played a huge role in the history of my own country, Denmark. It was here that the Danes received their national flag as the first country in the world, when Dannebrog fell from the sky during the Battle of Lyndanisse in 1219, which led to the Danish King Valdemar II defeating the Estonians in a battle that the Danes had almost lost. To this day, Dannebrog can be found on display in Tallin’s streets.
I couldn’t wait to explore a new country with a bit of Danish history. My new travel buddy Doris and I booked ferry tickets for a nine-hour trip to Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, departing from Helsinki, Finland. That would give us four hours to see the highlights of Tallinn.
Upon arrival, I immediately fell in love with Tallin and its many contrasts. In the centre of the city, old Medieval buildings and streets have been preserved. This area is surrounded by tall, modern buildings that dominate the skyline, creating a great contrast to the old centre.
We spent most of our time in Tallinn sightseeing, but we also found time to visit what would become one of my favourite cafés in the world, Cat Café Nurri! I love cat cafés and this one was the perfect place to end our time in Tallinn.
