When I found myself with a week off in between exams and my next semester, I decided to go somewhere. The Caucasus region was calling me and I decided to go with the most unknown country of the three, Azerbaijan.
I had six full days in the country and based myself in the nation’s intriguing capital, Baku. I got to know Baku quite well and I really liked the city. And I LOVED my hostel. It’s still the most fun hostel experience I’ve ever had!
But I also found time for two days far up north in Sheki and Kish, where I visited an ancient church and went hiking with a taxi driver in the snowy mountains. I absolutely loved this side of Azerbaijan.
When I got back to Baku, I went on a day trip to the Gobustan National Park to see ancient petroglyphs and erupting mud volcanos, and I spent my last afternoon with two new friends by Yanar Dag, Azerbaijan’s burning mountain.
I had a wonderful time in Azerbaijan and I was surprised by how beautiful the country really is – especially considering how little tourism it gets compared to the two neighbouring countries, Armenia and Georgia.
