Beyond my bachelor’s degree: Life and travel plans

With my time in Tasiilaq coming to an end, my Bachelor’s degree is also nearing its end. I took my last course in Tasiilaq and tomorrow I’ll be doing a presentation of my projects there at the university in Copenhagen. My final assignment has already been handed in, so freedom is just around the corner – if I pass the course, that is.

I have no plan B if I don’t pass the course (so let’s just hope that I do), but I have lots of plans if I do pass, some more certain than others.

2,5 weeks in Israel (+ a stopover in Latvia)

I’m finally going to the Holy Land. It’s about time as I’ve dreamt about it for as long as I can remember.

I’ll actually be flying there in just two days! I’m starting with five days in Jerusalem, which I’m overly excited to explore. I might take a day trip or two out from there, possibly to the Dead Sea and Masada. On December 15th, I’ll travel up north to Haifa to meet with five friends with whom I’m going on a Bahá’í pilgrimage with! The pilgrimage will last for nine days, ending on Christmas Eve. I’ll travel to Tel Aviv afterwards for two days before flying back home for New Years via Riga, Latvia.

I’ll have seven hours in Riga, a city I’ve previously explored on a trip with my mum, and I plan on visiting some Christmas markets in the old center!

I already know that this won’t be my last visit to Israel. There’s a lot I want to see in the country, and I especially want to venture to Palestine.

Working in Scotland for 2,5 months?

Until just recently, I was certain that I would be travelling to the Isle of Skye in Scotland in early January and staying until mid-March. My younger brother works on the island and had landed me a job there, but a few days ago, the manager told me there was no longer any work for me.

So now I have no idea what I’m going to do. I’m running out of money, so I will have to work, but I don’t know if it will be in Scotland, Denmark or somewhere third. I’m still hoping for Skye though as I haven’t seen my brother in ages and I was looking forward to spending so many weeks exploring the Scottish Isles with him.

A journey through Switzerland, France and Liechtenstein

Regardless of where I end up working, I’ll be heading home to East Jutland in mid-March as my mum and I are going on our annual mother/daughter trip! This year, we’ve decided to rent a car and journey through Switzerland and Liechtenstein, with six nights in central Switzerland and two nights in Annemasse, a French border town near Geneva.

I have spent a lot of time researching for this trip as there’s a lot I want to see in both Switzerland and Liechtenstein. So far, we’re planning to see Geneva, Lake Geneva, Zermatt, Zürich, the Rhine Falls, Luzern, Bern, the Swiss National Park, Interlaken, Grindelwald and other mountain towns in Switzerland and then spend a day exploring all of tiny Liechtenstein (not just its capital!). This is going to be an incredible trip!

Spring travels in the Nordics

My plans for April aren’t certain yet, but I’m thinking of dedicating the whole month to the Nordics. There’s a Bahá’í conference in the beginning of the month in either Norway or Sweden that I want to attend, and if it is in Norway, I also want to visit two friends in Bergen and Kristiansand.

After the conference, I hope to head up to my beloved Faroe Islands (it will be almost a year since I was there by then!). I have yet to visit the island of Fugloy, so if the weather is okay, I want to camp and hike there for at least a week! I also want to visit old friends and revisit some of my favourite places in the country!

Moving to Nuuk – again!

I’ve been offered a job as a travel guide with my own archaeological tour, and if that doesn’t fall through like the Scotland job, I’ll be moving back to my beloved Nuuk sometime in May!

The job is a part-time summer job, but I plan on getting a second job so I can earn some serious money (will be nice after more than a year without a stable income).

While I’m in Greenland, I also plan on exploring more of the country. My friend Augusta and I are talking about a trekking trip in South Greenland, and there’s also lots of places in North Greenland that I’m dying to visit. I’m overly excited to finally be moving back to the city of my dreams, and to see where this adventure will take me!

Summer plans

Aside from working in Nuuk, I hope to be able to travel to Europe twice during the summer. I attend the European Stone Age Gathering every year, and in 2020 it will be held in the Netherlands in late July, so I definitely want to go to that! In September, there’s a conference on the Mesolithic in Toulouse, France, that I also want to attend, so I hope I can get time off work to go to both!

After the summer

So far, the plan is to reside in Nuuk for as long as I love it there. It could be just six months or it could be several years, I honestly don’t know yet. But even if I do decide to stick around in Nuuk, I won’t abandon my world travels. I still have countless destinations that I want to visit (and revisit), so I plan to continue travelling as much as I possibly can.

So… What about further education??

Don’t worry. I’ll get to it eventually. I have plenty of dreams and hopes for my master’s and phd (and so on), but as of right now, I’m not ready. I need a bit of freedom first. Some travels here and there and some relaxing at home with my family without having to worry about the next assignment or exam.

I have decided to take a gap year (or more?) before carrying on with my master’s, simply because I can and want to. I also have to save up A LOT of money as my dream master’s programme is expensive… All in good time. I’m in no rush to finish my education. Right now, I’m young and healthy, so I want to live my life on my own terms.

    Hi Melissa,

Just a quick note to make you aware that in March (even April), the mountain areas in Switzerland will very likely still be covered in snow (Zermatt, Grindelwald, Swiss National Park). Unless, that is, you plan to ski or snowshoe, not many trails will be accessible.

You may be able to hike or make strolls in the mountain nature in some very specific sun-bathed places (like when you travel from lake Geneva to Zermatt, check out the South-facing slopes to your left-hand side ; or, on your way to Grindelwald, the steep slopes north of the lakes Thun and Brienz).

Whatever you do, have fun !

Hi Philippe, thanks for letting me know. I won’t be doing much hiking on this trip though (and certainly not in the mountains) as my mum is joining me and it would be too tough for her. We are just excited to see some of the country! I can always return a different time to hike in the mountains 🙂

Sounds like a lot of awesome plans. =) If you find yourself anywhere near Oslo, I hope to hear from you.
Fingers crossed you’ll get a new job in Scotland, so you can continue on with your plan. 🙂
