The first northern lights on Greenland

10.30 PM, September 16th 2018. First sighting of the northern lights on Greenland.

It has been 1257 days since I last saw them. The beautiful northern lights that blew me away and made me jump up and down for joy. At the time, Steve and I were staying with our late friend Thorhallur in the Westfjords in Iceland, which made the experience even more special to me.

Yesterday, I finally saw them again, this time with four great friends by my side. Regine, Charlotte, Maria, Barbara and I were sitting in the sofas finishing up a film, when I looked outside and saw stars! The sky hadn't been clear for a few days, so I was excited for the possibility for northern lights. And they did not disappoint. They were there, although only at Kp 2 out of 9, so they were mostly white to the eye. But still, we couldn't miss the opportunity to photograph our first northern lights sighting!

We rushed down a long flight of stairs to the oceanfront where there was almost no light pollution. Getting my gear set up took a while as I couldn't remember how I did it back in 2015, but after a few failed tries, I finally made it work and got the pictures that I was hoping for.

For the next half an hour, Maria and I were shooting away until the lights got too faint. All the while, I was trying to see the lights dance as they do, but it was hard for my eyes to catch it. I'm excited for the upcoming months here on Greenland where I'm sure we'll see them again and much more vibrant!

Wow, Melissa, that’s so exciting! I’ve never seen the Northern Lights before, and I’d love to do it. 🙂 Hopefully you’ll see it heaps of time, so that you can share it with me (oh, and if it turns out it’s there all the time, don’t be surprised if I all of a sudden turn up on your doorstep ;p)
